Phone Number:    520-297-5639
E mail Address:     shankin@theriver.com
Present Occupation:      English Teacher, Sentinel Peak High School
Life and Family:        I went back to school in 2002-2003, earning a Master's and teaching certificate at the
University of Arizona.  Since 2004, I have taught at an alternative high school in a public school system in Tucson.
Every day is a challenge.  I feel so lucky to be here with these kids! I have traveled to Italy every summer for the
last five.  I have three nieces, all of whom live in St. Louis.

Next 10 Years:        I foresee lots of travel ... I would like to watch many more of my students graduate high
school and become successful. ... I am enjoying watching my nieces grow up and will continue to revel in them. I
see lots of tie dye in my future ...

Favorite Memories:        I remember a carefree time highlighted by work on the yearbook and newspaper and
all the joys of a sheltered upbringing (compared with my current students).  I remember swim class with those
horrible cotton tank suits!!! And, going to the next class with wet hair ... I remember Charlie Mitchell playing Jimi
Hendrix for me -- the beginning of music appreciation.... Most of all, I remember the close friends ...

Judith Jackoway Newmark
Spouse:  Michael Newmark   '67
Phone Number:   314-340-8243
E mail Address:  jnewmark@post-dispatch,com
Present Occupation:   Theater critic, St. Louis Post-Dispatch
Life and Family:   Both of our daughters have graduated from college and live together in Chicago, where they
have performances coming up in the next few months - Jordan with her modern dance troupe, the Leopold Group,
and Eden, who acts, with Vitalist Theatre. Not much of a surprise, I guess - after all, they grew up going to the
theater. They thought it looked like fun because - it is fun! I tell them: Just have a good day job, too. My book,
"The Muny: Songs of St. Louis Summers," came out last year. That was a new direction. Also, a couple of years
ago I began teaching a writing class at Webster University and, this fall, at Washington University also - another
nice change of pace.

Next 10 Years:   Some more books - I'd like that. And I'd bet that I'll keep teaching. It's not just that journalism is
in complete turmoil (though it is) - it's that, now that my daughters are grown, teaching keeps me around kids all
the time. I seem to need that - maybe a lot of us do.

Favorite Memories:   Mr.Ohlendorf's English class - granted, at Hanley, not at U. City. Still, we were freshmen,
right? And what a class that was - the people in the desks, the incredible teacher in the front of the room, the
things we got to read together. And getting to know Jakki Savan in the Natatorium, where the swimsuits looked
equally hideous on all of us. And the time senior year when Lester Pines found out that I had never once been to
Steak n Shake, and insisted we go there for lunch. Ultra tref (a cheeseburger!) and so good. I'll bet Lester has
forgotten, but I never will.
